Both takes are wrong. The truth, like most diesel truth, sits in between — and once you understand what a cold air intake actually does on a diesel (and what it doesn't), the decision is straightforward.

What a cold air intake actually does (the boring engineering bit)
A cold air intake (CAI) replaces three things on your truck:
- The factory airbox
- The factory air filter
- The factory intake tubing
It swaps them for a sealed housing that pulls air from the coolest location it can find, a higher-flow filter (cotton or dry depending on brand), and a smoother, larger-diameter tube routing air to the turbo. The point is to reduce restriction and feed the turbo cooler, denser, cleaner air.
On a gas engine, that's worth a small amount of power on the dyno and a lot of internet bragging. On a diesel — particularly a turbocharged diesel — the picture is materially different and the case is stronger. Here's why.
Why diesel changes the cold-air-intake math
A diesel is fundamentally an air pump. Power scales with the air you can move through the cylinders and the fuel you can match to it. The factory tune (and your aftermarket tune if you've added one) is constantly adjusting fueling based on sensor readings of what's happening in the intake. Two things matter for a diesel specifically:
- Cooler, denser intake air = more oxygen per cylinder. A turbocharged diesel is already cramming air in under boost — every percentage of additional density helps fueling do its job and cleans up the burn.
- Less restriction = better turbo response. The turbo spools quicker, top-end airflow improves where the stock airbox was limiting, and EGT margin under tow improves.
You're not going to dyno an extra 100 horsepower from an intake alone. But you are going to feel quicker spool, cooler EGTs under load, slightly better fuel economy on the highway, and dramatically better filtration. Every one of those benefits is real and measurable.

- You've added (or plan to add) tuning. Tuning fueling without addressing airflow is leaving power and EGT margin on the table.
- You tow heavily. Lower EGTs and quicker spool show up immediately under load.
- You drive in dusty conditions. A sealed aftermarket housing with quality filtration is a real filtration upgrade over OEM, full stop.
- You're building the truck. A CAI is the easiest, cheapest piece of the supporting-mod puzzle and the right time to address it is early.
- You want the truck to sound better. Yes, this is a legitimate reason. We don't pretend otherwise.
When a cold air intake might not be worth it (yet)
Conversely, here's when we'd push it down the list:

- If your truck is brand new and under warranty for a specific reason you care about — the legal answer is Magnuson-Moss protects you, but if you'd rather be 100% certain through the warranty period, wait it out.
- If you're buying the cheapest "performance intake" off a marketplace — junk intakes don't seal, don't filter, and don't deliver. Stick to brands that actually engineer their products.

Cotton vs dry: which filter media should you pick?
Both work; the maintenance routine is different. Quick guidance:
- Cotton (oiled): highest flow, requires periodic cleaning AND re-oiling. If you're disciplined about service, this is what you want.
- Dry (synthetic): nearly as high-flow, easier maintenance (wash and dry, no oil step), and the worry-free choice. We install this most often.
The myth that aftermarket oiled filters destroy mass airflow sensors comes from over-oiled, badly serviced cotton filters in the gas-truck world. A properly serviced filter — or a dry filter — is a non-issue on modern diesels.
Install: a Saturday morning, no exaggeration
This is one of the friendliest installs in diesel. The process for nearly any modern truck:
- Unhook the stock airbox and intake tube (15–20 minutes).
- Bolt the new sealed housing into the OE mounting points.
- Drop in the new filter.
- Clamp the new intake tube to the turbo inlet, route breather lines.
- Reconnect electrical (MAF, IAT) and double-check tight.
- Start, listen, drive.

What the dyno actually shows
You don't have to take our word for it. Look at any honest dyno session comparing a stock airbox to a quality cold air intake on a modern diesel and you'll see a pattern emerge:
- A modest peak horsepower bump — typically 5–15 RWHP across the curve depending on the platform and the existing tune.
- A more meaningful gain across the entire torque curve — the truck pulls harder everywhere, not just at peak.
- Faster spool — the turbo gets on boost sooner, which shows up as a steeper early curve.
- Lower EGTs at the same power level — running cooler at the same output is its own kind of "gain."
Anyone selling you a triple-digit horsepower CAI gain on a diesel is lying. Anyone telling you it does nothing is also lying. The truth sits in the middle, and the middle is genuinely worth the price of entry.
Cold air intakes for stock trucks vs tuned trucks
One question we get constantly: "I'm not tuned — does the intake even do anything?"
Yes. Even stock trucks benefit from a cold air intake — quicker spool, slightly better economy on the highway, dramatically better filtration. The gains are smaller in raw horsepower because the stock tune isn't asking for the extra airflow, but the daily-driving benefits show up regardless. Stock-truck case is real.
That said, the strongest case for an intake is on a tuned truck. Tuning adds fueling demands without addressing airflow. Without an intake upgrade, you're feeding more fuel into the same restrictive airbox — leaving power and EGT margin on the table. If you're tuning, the intake isn't optional, it's the air-side complement that makes the tune actually work as intended.
What about heat-soak in summer?
A concern people raise about "cold" air intakes: doesn't a frame-mounted or fender-mounted filter just suck hot engine-bay air in the summer?
Honest answer: the heat-soak question is real on some kits, particularly cheap ones with poor sealing or filter locations near hot exhaust components. On a properly engineered kit from a reputable manufacturer (S&B's housings are sealed and pull from cool locations), the heat-soak issue is dramatically reduced compared to a worry-free OEM airbox. Add the fact that the filter is sealed away from direct exhaust heat, and the net intake temperature is usually cooler than what a borderline-sealed OEM box delivers.
You can verify this with an IAT log on a tune: the intake air temps on a quality CAI in summer driving generally track within a few degrees of ambient, not engine-bay temps. The "cold" in "cold air intake" actually means something when the housing is engineered right.
Service routine: the thing most owners skip
An aftermarket intake only outperforms OEM if you service the filter. The routine is dead simple:
- Dry filters: tap out the dust, wash with mild detergent and water, dry completely, reinstall. No oil. Service when visibly dirty (usually every 30-50k miles depending on conditions).
- Cotton filters: wash with the manufacturer's cleaner, dry completely, re-oil per instructions. Over-oiling is the #1 mistake — follow the directions on the bottle.
- Either way: inspect the sealing edges, the clamps, and the intake tube routing at every service. A loose clamp negates the filtration story.
Do that and the filter outlasts multiple OEM filter cycles, you don't have any concerns about MAF contamination, and the intake stays as effective on year ten as it was on day one.
