  • Stay on schedule. 30,000 miles (or annually) is a common interval for the particulate filter and water separator — sooner if you ever see contamination.
  • Keep replacement filters on the shelf. A filter you have on hand is a filter that gets changed; one you have to order is one you'll put off.
  • Inspect the old filters every change. They tell you what your fuel supply is actually doing.

Industrial Injection

Solid brand with a long Cummins history, particularly known for fuel-system components. They sell quality lift pumps that are worth a look on the right platform.

Glacier Diesel Power

Cult following in the Cummins world for their fuel-supply systems. Owners who use them swear by them. The flow story is excellent; the install can be more involved.

Kennedy Diesel

Long-running specialty shop with their own lift-pump offerings, particularly known on certain GM platforms. Quality stuff if it fits your application.

Generic marketplace pumps

Stay away. The $200 lift pump kit from a no-name seller is going to underperform, fail early, and frustrate you. Spend the real money once on FASS or AirDog and be done.

Real-world lift-pump testing: what we've actually seen

Years of installing and servicing aftermarket lift pumps has taught us a few things the spec sheets don't always tell you:

  • Quality filtration shows up in the filter media. Cut a used filter open from a FASS at 30,000 miles and you'll see what your fuel supply was actually doing. Clean media means a clean fuel system; loaded media means the filter is doing its job.
  • The trucks that fail early are usually the ones that skipped service. An aftermarket lift pump that gets ignored is just an expensive paperweight. Stay on schedule.
  • Sump kits make a real difference. Pulling fuel from the bottom of the tank means cleaner pickup, no air on hard cornering or steep grades, and the ability to run the tank lower without starvation.

When to upgrade an existing aftermarket pump

You're already running an aftermarket lift pump and wondering when to think about an upgrade. The signals:

  • You've outgrown the flow rate. If you started with a 100 or 125 GPH pump and you've since tuned the truck or added power, you may be starving the high-pressure pump under load. Step up to 165 or 220.
  • Service has gotten neglected and the pump has paid for it. Filters too far gone, the unit working too hard — a rebuild or replacement may make sense.
  • The pump is making noise it didn't used to. Bearing wear, motor wear, or both. Inspect, decide.
  • You're upgrading the rest of the fuel system. If you're already in for a CP3 / DCR conversion or injector work, retiring an older lift pump for a fresh one is the smart bundle.
  • It's been a decade. Even a well-maintained aftermarket pump has a service life. After 10+ years and a quarter-million miles, retirement isn't unreasonable.
